Gets you back on the courtJun 05, 2009 Unfortunately ankle injuries are a part of sports. After a severe sprain while playing basketball I looked for an ankle brace to help me get back on the court and protect my ankle during its time of recovery. After a little research, I found the McDavid Ultralight 195 and the AOS seemed to be the ankle supports favored most by professional and college athletes. I opted to try the McDavid.
First impressions: the brace is light although somewhat bulky above the ankle where all the straps converge. Still, it fit easily inside my basketball shoe. Initially I was aware of the bulk and the fact that I was unable to lace that shoe as tightly as the other. My first couple of times on the court I took it easy and didn't really test how my ankle would respond to lateral movement, quick cuts and lots of jumping. This also allowed me to gradually get used to wearing the brace and gaining confidence in it.
After 3 weeks: the only time I really notice the brace is when I first put it on. During play I rarely think about it. My ankle feels secure and I'm finding that I actually have more mobility with the brace than I first realized. I'm still not 100%, but I'm improving each time out. Most importantly I have confidence that my ankle is protected during a vulnerable time. That's huge when it comes to enjoying the game.
I've also been wearing the brace inside a cleated softball shoe. Sprinting up the line and rounding the bases I feel solid ankle support without it hampering my speed too much.
Seems like a winner.
